The Sweet Unraveling
Julie Dougherty ©2004

It was a union of the senses, a marriage of mind and heart
We found ourselves on connecting paths right from the start
A synchronistic convergence of seeming inconsistencies
Drew us to this one place of shared and sacred memories
They say the soul remembers everything it’s ever done
And the principle of spirit is to know it’s part of every other one

Chorus:
And in this populated solitude
We walk our paths alone
And the sweet unraveling is in the long journey home

In this rapacious world of dog-eat-dog, it seems escape lies within
Not to leave and run away but to forever begin again
I used to dream that I was flying halfway between the earth and the moon
Until I felt a tug of cord pulling me back way too soon
And then I realized with serenity that I belong here in this world
Within its dullness and duplicity lie rare and precious pearls

Chorus

What is it about life and time that sucks up the romance and the thrill?
Is it just familiarity playing with our will?
We do this dance of routinized steps fashioned to lull us into sleep
Then turn our backs on our own mysteries of the deep
Now and then we wake to the wonder and go down that road again
‘Til the pull of the mundane beckons us and the earthly dream begins
