Smooth and Steady Ride
Julie Dougherty / Lucas Pickford ©2004

I always thought that with maturity,
Life would make more sense
Maybe it’s just that reasoning
That robs us of our rightful innocence
The necessary turbulence, the ins and outs and the ups and downs
That turn us all around and help us to decide
Which paths to wander and which to set aside
It’s not a smooth and steady ride

Just when you think you’re through the growing pains
Sweet mysteries of love and life
Race toward you like a runaway train
It was just an inadvertant touch in the night
Feelings have a mind of their own I know, I know
An agenda quite apart
From what you tell your body, from what you tell your heart
Hang on to your hat, my friend, and to your shrinking pride
It’s not a smooth and steady ride

No matter how neatly we package our lies
There’s no escaping who we are
‘Cause when that moment of truth arrives
And the wrapping is flung afar and we’re left standing naked
To the moon and the stars
It’s not for the faint-of-heart, it’s not for the faint-of-mind
Too late to confess, much too late to confide
It’s not a smooth and steady ride
